Simultaneous interpreting
Simultaneous interpretation is an oral translation without noticeable pauses. This is “Real time” interpreting.The interpreter delivers words simultaneous to the speech of the speaker with a delay of only a few seconds.
Simultaneous interpreting not only requires irreproachable language proficiency, endurance and psychological stability, but also the availability of specific technical equipment including:
- Sound-isolation units;
- Sound amplifiers;
- Microphones;
- A supply of audio headsets.
The word “shushutazh” which is borrowed from the French language, denotes a type of simultaneous interpreting in which the words are pronounced quietly, directly into the ear of the listener without the use of special equipment. This is one of the most difficult kinds of translations because it combines the difficulties of simultaneous interpreting with the absence of technical equipment for connection.
Below, we provide some recommendations that, if carried out, will result in high-quality interpreting for your event:
- Determine whether you in fact require simultaneous, and not consecutive interpretation, or shushutazh-type translation. For example, sometimes it is inappropriate to use simultaneous interpreting, if the number of listeners is small (up to 3 people) or if not all participants will be present for the entire event;
- Ensure you request simultaneous interpreting services in advance;
- Verify the availability of equipment necessary to conduct simultaneous interpreting at your venue. If necessary, we can lease any required equipment to you;
- Supply the interpreters with a work timetable in advance of the conference where you indicating the speakers and the names of their discussion topics;
- Provide texts of reports in electronic or paper format in advance, and also other materials relevant to the topics of discussion. It is advisable to offer a glossary of special terms and abridgements (in both languages, if possible);
- Confirm that all technology is in proper working order on the day of or the day prior to the beginning of the conference. In addition, ensure the presence of a qualified technician in case there is an unforeseen problem or an equipment malfunction.
